I wanted to give the footwear side of my brain a break and challenge myself in new areas—apparel design in particular. So I decided to build an imaginary brand from scratch.
I began with basic silhouette sketches, studying fit and terminology, then explored an overarching theme. I landed on a “techno-occult” aesthetic, inspired by sci-fi like Cyberpunk and Shadowrun.
At the same time, I was going through something of an existential shift, and this project became a vessel to explore that—particularly the cultural disconnection I’ve felt growing up in North America.
At the same time, I was going through something of an existential shift, and this project became a vessel to explore that—particularly the cultural disconnection I’ve felt growing up in North America.
As the concept evolved, the sketches took on new life. The theme shifted toward an Afrofuturist direction, fused with modern Japanese graphic sensibilities and subtle Mayan influences. It began to reflect the arc of my life—from a diverse upbringing in Nova Scotia, through cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Berlin, various travels through Europe and Asia, Seattle, San Diego, and Portland, to a transformative road trip through rural Mexico, and now a relocation to Belize. Each place left an imprint; this project is where they converged.
The collection focuses on:
Oversized asymmetrical silhouettes
Quilted hoods, exaggerated collars
Modular arms and layered panels
Matte waxed cotton, hidden fasteners, embroidered symbols
Tactical cargo pants with offset zips
Anatomical motifs, rubberized knee symbols, tech leggings
All accented by whole-cut Italian leather shoes
Along the way, I flexed skills across design, illustration, branding, sketching, animation, video, music production, and more. It’s the kind of project you can get lost in—and that’s exactly what I needed.
This was personal. It helped me reconnect. And it reminded me just how creatively expansive these self-driven explorations can be.
